Dy 182: Traffic Gives You Time To Think

Ah, the great experience of traffic in the mall area of Paducah. It's not so much the traffic as it is the traffic lights. This one in particular, the left turn signal, gives enough time for about 4 cars to go through it before it has turned red again. Now that is frustrating.

The wait in line did allow me about 2 minutes to ponder on people choices. Not really "huge" choices, but one like the car in front of me. A VW Bug is definitely a big style choice that someone makes. My pondering led to thinking did this person choose this car because they are a hippie tree hugger? Did they think it was cute? Did they just get a good deal on it? Then I started thinking about the choices people make - are they motivated by the persons personality or do the choices themselves mold the persons personality?

Take this Bug for instance. This type of car is driven by a niche type of person. Does the person already have the characteristics of the niche personality when they buy this car or does having this car transform them into this niche? Do they all of a sudden take on the persona of a hippie, peace lover, flower child?

I have wondered these things before, but about appearances. Along the lines of people that choose to get tattoos that are on body parts that aren't easily covered. I have tattoos, so I am not condemning them, just wondering if a tattoo of a Grim Reaper on your forearm actually dictates how a person acts. Does this person subconsciously determine that, "Hey, I've got this evil tat on my arm, I now have to live up what this portray"? Or is this person really that much of a hard-nose before hand?

This is what I have pondered about the whole big hoops in your ears fad that is happening now. My son has these things in his ears and now must live with the consequences for the rest of his life. It was obviously a "fashion" choice for whatever reason unbeknown to me, but a choice nonetheless. So, does him having these hoops in his ears somehow conform him in the depths of his mind to a certain persona that he subconsciously has determined from the way others with these modifications act, dress, talk, etc.?

So, you see what I think about in the time I am stuck in traffic alone. Pondering why people do what they do or do the things people do dictate who they are. No doubt they are all interrelated and a cause and effect type of thing. Do we sin because we are sinners or are we sinners because we sin?

Day 181: What's Your Motivation For Giving?

Unless you are from the Paducah KY area you do not know what station 90.1 is. It happens to be the local KLOVE station, if you can call it local. It is actually a repeater and offers nothing in the local content area.

Over the days since Christmas they have been shilling for donations. I say "shilling" because of the reason they give for sending them money. They are pushing the "year end tax break" you will get. While that is true, should that be your motivation for giving? I mean will you give more if your tax break is much larger? Will you give just because of the tax break? Will you not give because you do not care about the tax break? I say that if the motivation behind giving to a "Christian" radio station is what they are pushing, tax savings, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. If you give to any ministry with the motive of benefiting yourself, then you are sinning. Your works are dead in the giving and you would probably be better off to not give.

I am not saying that you do not have to not claim the tax deductions for your offerings or donations, but if that is your purpose then don't give. Of course you should give and give well, but what is your motivation for that giving? KLOVE is really in a bad predicament here as they are pushing their listeners to give based on personal gain. But then again, KLOVE is really a works based "ministry" anyway. But that is another blog post all together.

They fill the airwaves with "feel good" stories about how good people feel about their giving. How they get a warm fuzzy feeling when they write a check every month. I know that they are listener supported, but c'mon, don't push personal gain as the reward for giving. That reward being feelings, tax breaks or whatever else. Just put it out there as supporting the ministry and for them to pray about it. But then again they set aside weeks at a time through the year to push for donations and push those feel good stories of feeling warm inside and of ow great people feel to give.

I say give, give, give and then give some more. Seek God on what ministry He would have you support and give to them. He will direct you where He wants you to support, but don't do it with the wrong motivation. It may even be KLOVE that you give to for all of the right reasons and that is wonderful. You have followed biblical mandates of giving and God will honor that, even though they are pushing a self motivated, self centered reason for giving.

Be discerning is all I can say. That would make a fine New Years resolution for us all - to discern better and compare everything to the Word of God.

Day Number Blog Posts

Just wanted to fill anyone in on my "Day XX" blog posts. On my birthday this year, July 2nd, I had the idea to start a daily post using a picture taken that same day. I would then tell a little about the picture and it would end up being a 365 day journey through my life with pictures. It is meant to be something like a visual diary/ journal post.

The rules were fairly simple, take a picture and write about it. Do not use pictures taken any other day. That was it and I have stuck with it most days. There was a day that I scanned some pictures from many moons ago when Chandra, my wife, and I were first together. I figured that I scanned them that day, so that's how I justified that.

Anyway, I hope that you have an opportunity to look back over my daily posts, which will be half way through the year tomorrow. My birthday, July 2, is the middle day of the year - 182 days before it and 182 days after it, so that is pretty cool too. Feel free to comment on nay post, even if it is not in agreement with something I have said. I normally will approve any message as long as it is not profanity laden or just flat out mean. I have no hangups with someone disagreeing with me at all. I actually like to hear other viewpoints most of the time and like to stress my points, but not to an argumentative point.

Thanks for stopping by my little chunk of cyberspace.

Day 180: Angry Birds Sucked Me In

Alright, I broke down and purchased Angry Birds for my phone. Didn't want to do it, but the Lite version was getting old. I also have had $1.78 balance in my iTunes account for about a year now and decided to pay the $.99 and get something fun to play.

Angry Birds it was then. I've been playing the Lite/ free version since I got my new iPhone a few months ago and really like the game. Now that I have downloaded the full version I will have something to do while I am waiting in the Wal Mart express lane that is barely moving. I guess those Lite/ free/ trial versions pay off for the game developers after all. But the simplicity yet challenge of Angry Birds is what got me hooked.

I should probably spend more time on the biblical study apps that I have downloaded. Logos, GTY and the free ESV bible are great resources too. Maybe I should just reevaluate my time consumptions on the phone. I think games are okay every once in a while as long as the do not take over or consume your time. Nothing wrong with a little stress reduction playing a mindless game. But like everything else it has the potential to become sin when it does actually cross the line into quasi-idolatry. I say "quasi" because you do not actually bow to a game, but your time does. How much would be the determining factor of a problem.

Like everything else, one must be discerning while playing games, watching TV or participating in any other form of entertainment. Pick your activities wisely and watch that you do not allow it to become sinful. Also the content can be sinful in games, just like on TV or what music you listen to. Just seek the Lord and ask Him to allow you discernment in this area. I am sure your conscience will let you know when having fun turns into having an idol.

Day 179: You Can't Label Me

What I wouldn't have given for a role of packing tape and a UPS label when I took this picture. Just kidding before you animal rights folks crawl all over me. I do not mistreat animals or harm them in any way, even though I would like to this cat some times.

This cat has taken a liking to me for some reason. It likes to sleep on my leg at night, which is kind of warm but also kind of limiting in my movements while I sleep. I am not a cat person anyway, but this cat gets to me more than I ever thought a cat could.

The time the cat has been in our house I have been somewhat civil about it. My wife likes it, so I tolerate it. Make the wife upset and life is not so easy anymore. Actually I like to please my wife and if she finds happiness in a stinkin' cat, then I must compromise for her. But, first chance and this critter is gone. So, are you in the market for a living leg warmer? I can hook you up.

Marriage is about give and take. I was going to insert a joke here, but it is a serious matter. You must be willing to sacrifice things no matter how uncomfortable they make you. Sometimes to better good is the answer and not comfort anyway. As husbands we are commanded to sacrifice for our wives. Although having a cat in the house may not seem like a sacrifice to some, it is to others. I have never liked cats and sometimes they make my eyes itchy and give me a rash, so I do give up my comfort (and heath) for my wife.

I would do almost anything for my wife. I can't think of anything that I would not do. God has given her to me and I cherish her. A life without her would be very hard indeed. I never want to find out.

Day 178: Deer Meet Car, Car Meet Deer

It was bound to happen. I am surprised it hasn't happened before now either. I had the unfortunate circumstance of hitting a deer this morning. No injuries except the front of my car. I will need a new headlight, fender and front bumper cover. The deer jumped up and ran away, which was a relief to me.

Deer are really prevalent in this area. I see at least one a day either standing close to a road or prancing across one, some times just a car length or three in front of me. This time it was standing in the road, I slowed and headed for the other lane and he decided to move too. I slammed on the brakes, and he started running then decided he was going to try and run through the front of the car instead of running away from the car. He hit the car, tumbled a time or two jumped up and fled the scene.

Damage total? Two estimates in the $1600.00 range. Insurance deductible? $1000.00. If I turn it in it will also show on my record and could possibly raise the rates, even though I have been accident free for the majority of my life. The only exception was being rear-ended while I was setting still, not my fault in the least. One fortunate thing is the parts are available on ebay for about $500-$600 and I know a guy that may possibly be able to do the labor and still come in under $1000.00, which is great. But, if someone would like to donate to what I am calling the "Bambi fund", just send me a message or leave a reply here. I'll be happy to let you help with this unforeseen expense.

We were in God's hands this morning. Even though some may shake their fist toward the sky and ask "WHY!?", I see that God's protection was in full force. It could have been a much worse damage bill, could have deployed the airbags if hit just a foot or so to the left, could have tumbled through the windshield and the deer could have been killed. All of which were not in the plan this morning.

When events and circumstances came together to allow us to purchase this car I knew it was God. This car was dedicated for God to do with what He wishes and for me to be a willing participant in those needs. God decided the car needs a new headlight assembly and fender, so it's going to get one. Maybe it will open a witnessing encounter with someone. Maybe it was a lesson for me to realize that God is still in control, even as I drive down the road. It is not known now and never may be known why this happened, but I do know that God was not surprised by it.

The same holds true for the other areas in our family right now. We are looking at some potentially anxiety ridden moments that need to be fully handed over to God. He has proven Himself over and over to us and this is not exception. But oh how we forget God's goodness to us so quickly. Maybe the deer was a wake-up call to snap us back into reality of His control. He is our Father and He takes care of us and may we all see that on a daily, hourly and minute by minute basis.

Day 177: Wal Mart Is The Waiting Place

Seems like Wal Mart would have the day after Christmas figured out by now. A multi-billion dollar a year in sales and they can't figure out how to get their customers out the door in a timely manner.

Stopped by to get some ice cream for Chandra after church tonight and it was fairly busy. I assume that a lot of people were there partaking in the 50% off after Christmas sale, which we did earlier today, after morning service. Tonight Wal Mart had about 3 lanes opened with cashiers and another 3 that were self checkout. The lines for each were back to the clothing departments, so I thought I was fortunate to get a fairly close place in the "Express Lane". I figured, that I would be out in no time.

20 minutes later and I am still standing behind someone that had over the 10 item limit. By over I do not mean 1 or 2 things, I mean like double the limit. Then she was trying to pay with 2 separate gift cards and one was not scanning properly. So, the express lane with 3 people in front of me took about 20-30 minutes to make it through. I told Chandra that her ice cream was probably milk by the time I made it home. I also noticed that behind me a couple had a full buggy of groceries, running over the top of the buggy full too. Can people not understand the 10 items or less concept? It is simple, you can come through the line if you have 10 items or less, not rocket surgery here.

I actually had to pray while standing in line because I was really getting agitated at the extended wait. I should have been grateful that I was standing in a heated building, buying a food product that was not a necessity, using money that I earned at a job after driving there in my nice warm car. To top that off I should be really happy that I had just came from a church service that I did not get spat on for attending and was not ridiculed when I entered or left the church building..... yet that is, anyway.

I really need to start looking at the blessings in my life rather than the perceived hindrances. I suppose that God is showing me this because I noticed it this evening. This is yet another grace from God that He did not have to show me. I am so undeserving of the favor He has shown and continues to show me. It is my current prayer that He will show me more of these moments as He did tonight and help me put them to rest and be conformed more to the image of Christ.

Day 176: Christmas Day 2010

Had a really good day with the family today. We met at my Mom's house for lunch and opened gifts and had some good times. My brother was not able to make it in this year from Chattanooga, but would've had some slippery travel if he did. We received about 3" of snow and had the first white Christmas that I can remember of late.

Any time is a good time when you can get folks together to share in the Savior. I know that many people celebrated Christmas today without knowing who Christ truly is. Many that did are deceived in their sin and likewise do not know the true and risen Savior. The modern gospel takes a heavy tole on many people.

Those that truly know Christ need to step up and be the slaves that we are. Proclaim the Word in season and out of season to the glory of God. Stand up against the lies that permeate churches across the world and lift up the King. If we only believed that our friends and families would spend eternity in hell we would speak more openly and diligently about the True God of scripture.

I pray that He burdens me with this and uses it to open my mouth more. I pray that He pricks your hearts to speak boldly as we are told to do in scripture. Not this wishy washy stuff that is prevalent, not the name it and claim it or "God has a wonderful plan for your life" kinds of messages. Stand true to His Word and proclaim His Lordship over all. He is the Reason for every Season. His Name is above all Names. Now GO! Live life like that is true.

Day 175: White Christmas

It's a white Christmas this year for my general area of the U.S. This is something that doesn't happen very often, so it is pretty cool when it does. We have about 3" on the ground right now, as I type and possibly a little more overnight and tomorrow. So, it is officially a white Christmas.

Now that it has happened, why is it such a big deal? I mean it is beautiful to see God drape His creation in a spotless white blanket, but why do people associate it with Christmas? Why do people want to make a big deal about it? I have no idea and a quick internet search did not turn up any answers. If anyone knows the answer of why it is desired, let me know. And not "because I want a white Christmas".

One thing that must be the focus of anything with Christmas is Christ. Not only His birth, but also His sinless life and His death on the cross for our sins. You can not exclude any part of Christs life on earth when celebrating Him. Without the purpose of the cross and His sacrifice, there would have been no cradle.

I guess Christmas has become just a commercialized machine as of late. Retailers trying to outdo each other with "bargains", selling decoration in the stores even before Halloween, Black Friday extravaganzas. That is only the commercialized part. On the consumer part, the retailers could do nothing like they do without the financing of their customers. People always try to outdo one another with giving, decorating, singing, participating in festivities or whatever else people do just because. Most of the things people do are from tradition and because their parents did it. I mean why do we decorate trees? Hang lights? Wrap presents? Use stockings to put small gifts in? Kiss under the mistletoe? Why do we do what we do?

I plan on doing a fairly in depth study of the celebration of Christmas, beyond what I already know. By "already know" I mean all of the pagan influences from the early church to pull their members away from the sun celebration. I want to know how things were incorporated into the celebration of the Saviors birth. Once again, if anyone has substantiated wisdom on this please respond here or send me a message.

May the joy of the Lord flood each of your lives, not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year. He is not only the reason for the season, He is he Reason for everything! To God be the glory, great things He has done.

Day 174: More Of What Our Kids Are Consuming

Saw this set of books in the local Lifeway store tonight. They caught my eye walking down the aisle, as I very rarely venture down the kids book section. But the evil depiction of a clown sparked some curiosity. I had to know what this tin held. Then I found out, a mystery book series targeted at Christian kids. Let me clarify that last sentence, professing Christian kids.

This is the kind of product that should probably be thrown out of any bookstore that professes to be for Christians. Why even sell something like this? No wonder when the kids that claim to be Christians are "backsliding" when they get a taste of freedom in college when they turn 18. Their minds are being filled with trash like this in the name of Christ.

Of course, I have not read these books, I am going on appearance only. The graphics and the titles are as far as I would venture with something like this. I can see no reason to justify a product like this in any way, shape or form. But, once again I ask "Where are the parents?" Why do parents let their sweet children partake of this rubbish? I would even say the parents are the ones that are buying this stuff for their kids for the sole purpose of trying to keep their interest in Jesus instead of falling into "worldly" things. But, isn't this the exact type of things they are trying to keep their kids from?

When a parent does not condemn stuff like this, and even actually condone it with purchasing or turning a blind eye, the kids are being put into a very deep pit that is getting very slippery on the sides. A child is not a discerning being, they strive for attention, they seek relativity and they want to fit in. So, reading the latest John MacArthur book is not the source material that finds a young person labeled as cool.

Please parents, be more discerning as to what your kids are partaking of. Look through their bookshelves, ask them about what they are reading, stay on top of them. I am sure you will not be spotless parent in their eyes for long if you convey the morality that the bible say we need to put forth. But, then again, most of these kids are still unconverted, even those that have professed Christ 10 years earlier in Sunday school. These kids are lost and on the road to hell, so please ask God to give you a more discerning spirit on your children's intake of "entertainment" and other areas.

Day 173: Waiting Rooms And Scanners

Received a call today from Chandra, she was at the doctor and was being sent to the hospital for some tests. She wasn't able to drive, so I jumped into my car and zoomed over to pick her up. The main picture today is one of the waiting rooms that we set in for a while. The other picture is of a heart scan that she was going through, one of several different tests they performed today along with the customary blood tests.

We are not sure what the prognosis is yet and will find out some tomorrow. All I know is I love my wife dearly and want her to be better. I ask you all to pray for her and for the whole family as we go through this time of wait and see. Pray that we will lean on God through all of this, like we have learned to do. He is in control and His grace in the past is what we must look at. We can't look at all of the "maybes" and the "what ifs" that cross our minds. God is firmly in control as He has been for eternity and may we hold tight to that.

The day was long, but I am thankful that I was able to spend that time with my wife. Also, I didn't have to work either, which was just a bonus. I have fallen deeper in love with Chandra over the years and this past year has been the most beneficial to our relationship ever. God has blessed us beyond compare and beyond measure. I love Him even more for allowing me to love Chandra even more. She truly is His love gift to me.

Day 172: Where Are You Headed?

Aren't GPSs amazing? The one pictured has seen several miles on it, even in Washington State. It is a real lifesaver and timesaver and has revolutionized travel. Before you would have to buy a map and then have someone else navigate each turn, exit and mile marker from point A to point B. Now you just select your destination and leave the work up to the Garmin. You can even use features that will find the nearest gas station, restaurant, bank or shopping center. It will calculate you ETA, tell you your MPG and let you know what your MPH is. Quite amazing and after driving in New York I said I would never travel without one.

Frustration is only the tip of the iceberg in explaining my experience in New York. I had found an exceptional deal on a Nissan Altima in Newark New Jersey, had frequent flier miles that covered the plane trip and knew New York City was just a few miles away. My plan was to just hop over to the city, snap pictures of Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square, jump on the road and zoom on home, all 16 hours drive of it. Well, it didn't quite work out that way.

The paperwork on the car was finished about 3:00 and I was off to New York. I knew it wasn't far because I could see the skyline from the Newark Airport, so it was closer than I thought. I made it to the toll booth to enter Manhattan, saw the Bronx crossing the bridge and was on the lookout for signs telling me where to get off. So, I end up on the other side of Manhattan after not seeing any signs saying "Hey - Jeff - Take This Exit". I ended up on City Island, that was actually a neat little place to mistakenly end up. I turned around and headed back the way I came. This time determined to look for my sign. Once again I did not see it, so I turned around again and just took an exit that looked like it would take me to the right area. This time I drove from one end of the island to the other several times, from one airport to the other and frustration was really building.

I stopped for a map, in a less than desirable looking convenience store and headed back out. At this time it was getting dark, so I knew I wouldn't be seeing much, if anything. So I head along with the flow of traffic, with the hopes of hitting Time Square, which I never did. I did see a whole slew of taxi cabs and a lot of people. I was getting frustrated, it was getting later and I was ready to get out of town. I asked someone how to get back to Jersey and was on my way home. I did get to see the Lincoln Tunnel, which was wild driving through, but nothing of the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero or Time Square. I was, at the time, just happy to be leaving and heading home.

That is the time I decided to never travel without a GPS again. If I would have had the trusty Garmin I would have zoomed right to the places I wanted to see. I suppose I am over it now, but I do want to go back some day, with the family and with the Garmin, definitely with the Garmin.

Looking back to that day I still have good memories of it. It was a life changing event to purchase my first new car. It was also a learning experience and a reminder that I am not always in control, no matter how much I try to be. I also realize that God had His hand through the whole experience of getting the car. I can see His fingerprints back several months when I received free frequent flier miles from a quality trip to Baton Rouge for my job. A few other guys and myself had a flight canceled, so they gave us each 10,000 free miles. The other guys didn't want theirs and gave them to me. At the time I just figured Chandra and I would take a weekender somewhere with a free flight. Come to find out when I tried to add the miles to my account I could only add one, but through a mixup they allowed me to add them all. There was also a waiting period of a few days between putting the miles on my account and actually being able to use them, but once again, somehow that waiting period was waived and some airline operators did not know how it was done. But I did. So, it all fell into place, miles in my hands, miles in my account, found a great deal and off to New Jersey I went. When I first sat in the car and was driving off the lot I prayed that God take the car and do with it what He wills. I know that He gave me the means to get the car and I know that He is in control of it. I know that if He decides it needs to slide into a tree that it is what is best for the car and it might lead to a witnessing opportunity with the wrecker driver.

Who knows what God has in store for us? We definitely do not have a GPS for our path of life. All we need to know is stay on the narrow path and it will lead to God. There is nothing that can take a child of God's from that path, so just continue on, even if you get frustrated and feel lost at times, just keep driving toward the goal, which is to see God glorified and to tell others of His goodness and mercies.

Day 171: A-Tract-ing Attention

Received the newest shipment of tracts from the Bezeugen Tract Club a few days ago. For some reason the "Get Out Of Hell Free" tract is one of my favorites. I guess it's because I like to play Monopoly or that it is clever enough to keep someone from throwing it away at the next trash can they pass. What is most important is that it gets the Gospel into someones hand.

The Bezeugen Tract Club is a very wonderful ministry. They supply a months supply of tracts, just for the asking. They do not require a payment or donation, but if the Lord leads you to help support this ministry I highly suggest doing so. The way it works is they send you 30 tracts, with your promise to pass them out, one for each day of the month. They also have other tracts for sale, at a nominal price and they put out some quality work.

Tracts are a large part of my witnessing. I prefer the million dollar bills, because they, too, catch peoples eyes and they hold on to them. Lost people really like them, enough so they will ask for more so they can help pass them out to other lost people. I leave tracts in restaurants, with tips, at the gas pumps, in restrooms and in the post office. Anywhere you go take some tracts with you, pray that God shows you the doors He opens and take a step through those doors. I really don't think you have to ask for doors to be open, they already are, we are just too blind sometimes to see them. Be prepared to share your testimony with those you encounter, because a lot of the time what God has done to you and for you is the best witnessing that can be done. Of course, show them the Word and the Gospel how we are putrid sinners, fallen and in need of the Savior. Tell them of His sacrifice and blood shed for our sins, something that could be paid no other way but through the Spotless Lamb.

There are several other websites to purchase tracts, in many different formats. I suggest that you make sure to read the front and backs of tracts you purchase and pass out, so you will know that their message is solid and biblical. There are many tracts out there that are not biblical, so please be wary and discerning. Below are a few websites you can visit for tracts that are biblical. I am sure there are more, but these are ministries that I trust in quality and content. They have the "Jeff Seal Of Approval".

Day 170: Lights All Around

Sorry the picture is a little blurry today. I was taking it as I was stopping my vehicle. Just a random house on the road near my church, nothing "special" about the house itself. It did get me wondering about the reasons for the different decorations throughout the Christmas Season.

I have been told a few times lately that the Christmas tree is from a pagan ritual outlined in Jeremiah 10. I do not believe it, although it does bare some similarities. The biggest argument against that assertion is Jeremiah was written about some pagan practices long before Christmas trees were used. But, what about the lights, the garland, reds and greens, stockings by the fireplace, etc. Do all of these customs have pagan roots? Do they in any way convey what Christmas is supposed to represent?

I am well aware of the Winter Solstice pagan holiday that the early church wanted to draw their members away from. I am not sure though how much of that festival still has impact on Christmas traditions. I guess this blog post is the beginning of my investigation as my curiosity has been piqued.

If anyone knows the reasons for decorating your house with lights, kissing under the mistletoe or any of the other things I mentioned are, please leave a comment on this blog and enlighten us. Also, please leave any links that may also help with a better understanding. I will also look and do some investigating and will either add to this blog post or comment myself. I'd just like to know why people do certain things. Why are so many seemingly non-Christ focused held in such esteem and why they are even a part of what should be a Christian Holiday. Why the extra "baggage" of these things and why not the call to focus on the Savior?

Oh, Santa Clause information is not needed unless it pertains to some other decoration or helps understanding of one of the things I listed. I did the "Santa thing" throughout my life, but I was unconverted the whole time. At this point I do not think I would subject any kids to the persona of Santa.

Day 169: The Costs Of Relevancy

I want to start this post off with a disclaimer: I love Hobby Lobby. I love the fact that the business is based on Christian principles and is ran in accordance to scripture. I love the fact that they are closed on Sundays. I love the fact that they carry Christian themed items. I really love that they are actually on the less expensive side of the line as well.

Now, with that being said and without me trying to bash Hobby Lobby I must continue. My picture today is of a cross. Not just any cross, but a cross made to look like hot peppers. This was on the shelf display with other pepper items. Just as they have a cowboy shelf with a rustic cross with barbed wire, this particular shelf catered to those with a unction for spicy red peppers.

This is a classic case of going a little too far with relevancy in order to "fit in" with a certain decor or persons taste. The Christian Cross is a sacred thing, where Christ paid for the sins of humanity, pouring out His blood for a thankless world. Taking the image of the Cross and making it into something whimsical like red peppers is not a good thing. I would not go as far as saying it is heretical, but it is showing a lack of regard for what the Cross signifies.

Once again, I am not bashing Hobby Lobby. They have many wonderful items in their stores and I will not stop shopping there because of this item. I do hope it was an oversight in the purchasing department's decision making. Maybe it was a lumped in purchase with other items, who knows? I just do not think it is appropriate as a Cross.

I will close by saying thank you to Hobby Lobby for standing on the Truths of God. Thank you for not giving in to the world and the present evil age. Thank you for publicly stating that God is the focus of your business. Thank you for allowing your employees the opportunity to worship on Sundays. Thank you for the full page advertisements across the USA wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, especially in this "politically correct" society. It is the Hobby Lobby role model I would build my business after if I ever had a business. Thank you and may God continue to bless Hobby Lobby.

Day 168: Dinner With My Darlin

Had a wonderful dinner with my beautiful bride tonight. This was due to her nice boss who gave her a few gift cards for Christmas.

We ate at Logan's and had their 2 for $20 meal deal which included both our meals, an appetizer and a huge dessert for sharing. With our drinks we were only out $1.46 for dinner (+tip).

I always enjoy an evening with my beautiful wife. God was gracious to me when He allowed me to marry Chandra. I will always consider myself fortunate fir the gift of my bride. This even though we are not the "perfect couple", but God is still working on us. He has taken us through a lot together an apart. I am still amazed that He would give me such a beautiful wife and oh, so thankful.

Day 167: Cheesecake Delight

Was surprised today with a gift of cheesecake from Dena. She had brought Jason some by work and decided to bring me a piece as well. I have two words for Dena's cheesecake "YUM-EE". It was a very pleasant surprise and I soon partook of its creamy goodness. I saved some for tomorrow and will probably have it sooner than I am anticipating, because I want to drive to work right now and get it.

Isn't it great to have great friends that do nice things for you? Not for any personal gain, to receive anything in return, just because they want to. I'd say that it is a fruit of the Spirit, in the kindness and goodness part of the list (Galatians 5:22-23). By a fruit of the Spirit, it means that God has given you the capacity to be these things, because of your new birth.

The fruits of the Spirit were contrasted, in scripture, against the works of the flesh. This is our old nature, the flesh, that still struggles to gain control of us again. This is a reality until we reach the Glory Land with the Savior. But as long as we remain focused on Christ, the Holy Spirit will work in us to show His fruits and glorify the Father. Our focus is key, because it is a struggle in the "supernatural" world as we are constantly bombarded with fiery darts from the enemy. We must always remain focused on God and He will direct us along the path. It is when we gaze away and fulfill the lusts of the flesh that we are sinning.

May we all look to the cross for strength. May the Lord fill us with His Spirit daily so that we can walk in accordance to His Word and manifest the fruits of the Spirit continually.

Day 166: Decisions, Decisions

Can't seem to make up my mind on what to drink tonight. Should I choose the Diet Coke in the can or the Diet Coke in the bottle? The bottle it was. What a decision to make, huh? Not a life changing or altering choice, but one that shows the great wealth that my family has in comparison to the rest of the world.

I was venture to say that if you are reading this you are among the wealthiest percentage of Earth inhabitants. Chances are you had a meal today, have a faucet to get a drink of water at any time you choose, have a toilet in your house, a refrigerator to keep your abundance of food fresh, have a stove/ oven to prepare your meals on and probably also have a microwave oven because we are so rushed for time these days. One thing an American home is not without these days is a TV, or at least one with most families having 2 or more. You won a pair of shoes or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5. Your closet looks like the clothing department at the mall lined with many shorts, pants and accessories.

So, you don't have it so bad. The majority of the population did not even have a meal today, have the clothes on their back, no shoes, have to walk to collect enough water to bring back and boil so their family can have it to drink. No Wal Mart in sight, no grocery store with Diet Coke and no indoor plumbing, because they live outside. We are so blessed in this country and still complain. We are probably cursed if you think about it. God has blessed us so richly that we complain about the "stuff" we have and depend on it for our happiness. The majority i spoke of have God to depend on, so they are the blessed ones, not us.

Next time you complain because nothing is on the TV to watch, think about those others that have never even heard of television. They are probably huddled together, praying to God and thanking htem for the cup of rice He supplied today.

Day 165: An Apple A Day

Oh, Apple. How long ago our relationship started. Although I didn't really realize it at the time, I was a small part in what would be one of the most successful businesses in the world - Apple. I worked at a local Apple dealer straight out of high school for a few months. I was co-opping out from my electronics class to the local Apple dealer, trying to fit in somewhere that I had no idea what to do. Not much leadership while on the job led to my untimely demise from that job. I pretty much was the showroom duster and sweeper, because I knew nothing about computers at the time and everyone else seemed too busy to lend a hand. This was in the mid 80s as the newest Mac was introduced, known then as the Macintosh 512K.

The 128K was a really cool computer at the time and had a price tag of about $2,800.00, which was a hefty sum back then. Before that my computer experience included a Commodore Vic 20 and long nights of coding from a book to play a text based game. But those were the "good ol' days". I lost interest in computers and never touched one again until around 1995. Since then I have been self taught in much of computing.

Now, about 25 years since my first encounter with Apple, I carry a iPhone around in my pocket that put the computing power of the 1980s Mac to shame. I can do almost anything with my iPhone, including making calls, if you can believe that. It is amazing how far technology has come, but I have also seen a counter reaction to the rise in technology. Sin.

With the rise of affordable technology and computers, to the common internet connection (thanks to Al Gore), sin has been in a steady and accelerated climb to heights unfathomable. People can, with the click of a mouse, be transported to wherever their hearts content to take part in whatever their current sinful preoccupation is. I am not only referring to porn and chat rooms, but to places like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter that consume much time in a lot of peoples lives.

Don't get me wrong, I don;t think the internet or the aforementioned websites are sinful themselves, but like anything else their use is what can make them sinful. I frequent Facebook and have been very edified by a lot of people that I may never have met this side of Heaven. But, I do see the potential to allow its use to be sinful, time robbing and hurtful to anyone not wary of that threat. I think it is one of those areas that each individual needs to seek God about. He may lead someone to turn the monitor off or He may lead that same person to start an internet based study group. Who knows except the Lord?

I just ask those that feel a personal conviction to not try to impress that on others. That is where the heart of the legalist flourishes. This is not one of those cut and dry, black or white issues. I would say it is a neutral issue, that if given seed will flourish into sin. I would liken it to listening to music or watching TV - it's not what your doing, it's what you are consuming when you do that activity.

As with anything else, seek the Lord for personal guidance. Do not give place to sin that will blossom. Guard your heart and mind and allow God to use technology to His glory through you.

Day 164: It's About That Time

It is about that time of year. Guess what time that is. Okay, I'll tell you. It's the time of year that I start making assorted candies for Christmas. Last year I added fudge to my repertoire and this year I may try to make peanut brittle (again). The staples that I make are peanut butter buckeyes and a special chocolate cookie with a Reese's Miniature in the center.

Last year I kind of went fudge crazy after making my first batch of peanut butter fudge. I then made chocolate, peanut butter and chocolate, mint and vanilla. All were quite tasty and were well received. This year I may cut back the offerings to the simple peanut butter and chocolate. But who knows? I will probably try something else too, maybe a cherry fudge for those of my friends and family that like that flavor.

It is weird how certain tastes can illicit certain memories. This goes for certain smells as well. I can remember as a child stepping into my grandmother's home during family get togethers like Christmas and Thanksgiving. The first thing I noticed was the smell of black coffee. All the adults were drinking their coffee, but not us kids. I don't remember exactly what we had, but the coffee was off limits. I do remember having some as I got older, but not black and heavily mixed with cream and sugar. To this day I am not a coffee drinker, but the smell brings back some good memories of my youth.

What smells or flavors bring back memories for you? I'm sure that not all the memories are good. Watermelon is one such for me, both the flavor and smell. I got sick after eating watermelon when I was a child and now will not eat any since it left a lasting impression on me.

It is great to remember things from days gone by. It helps keep us aging folk on our game with fleeting memories. One area I try to remember more and more is the time of my conversion. I want to look back and remember that wonderful feeling of the reality of God in my life. As we progress we seem to get numb or used to that feeling and need reminding. We get into our rut and need to be pulled from it often to remember what God did and is still doing to us and for us. He initially saved and justified us, but He still saves us daily and is continually sanctifying. We are being conformed to the likeness of Christ daily, if not then you will probably want to do some self checking and see where your faith does lie. That is our main goal in this life, to be conformed to the image of Christ and to glorify the Father.

Sit back some time and meditate on God. Think about what He has done for you personally then think of how He has used you and is still using you. Think about the sacrifice He made just for you. Ponder on how far He has brought you out of your sinful past. Search your mind and remember that feeling when you were first converted and ask God to allow that to be a daily occurrence for you as you regain a closer walk with Him.

Day 163: Snow What I Mean?

Today was the first snowfall of the winter season. It was great to see the flakes falling and the intricacy of the flakes. I examined some that were stuck to my shirt this morning and how perfect they appeared.

I think it is amazing how God put order and structure into nature. Just looking at a tiny snowflake really opens that up for a person. Then to think of how the flake was formed in a geometric pattern to form just a single flake. Then for those flakes to start falling and blanketing the ground like a cotton sheet. How can anyone deny the Creator?

Then, what about other things that show order? How about the human body? How does life spring forth on its own? For those evolutionists - how did the first mammal decide it needed lungs? Why would it have the need to crawl from it's comfortable ooze? How would the newly formed lungs operate? How about the circulatory system for living beings? What was formed first, the heart, the blood or the veins and arteries? How would the others know to be formed and how could those already formed survive without the others? Do you explain that by them evolving in tandem? If so, then why would they have the need to?

It is a great leap of faith to believe in evolution. It would take more faith in man and their "explanations" to believe that we evolved by chance, from a mire of goo struck by lightening to create life. Think that one through too. If the first life was created, how did it survive? How did it know to consume something to keep living? It couldn't have an it would have died off as well. A great leap of faith to believe in what these scientists are passing off as facts. Then there is the big bang. Have you ever seen an explosion? Did you see anything orderly after the explosion happened or was there nothing but chaos?

So, next time you have the awesome opportunity to look at a snowflake think about the order that God put into motion. Think about how He orchestrates the laws of physics, gravity and life. Think of how He breathes His breath into every human created. It is all from Him and all about Him. We should definitely acknowledge that more in our every day lives.

Day 162: Shopping For Shoes

Today was/ is a big day for Forrest. While it is not an official "date" he does have a set time to meet his girlfriend for a dance. He needed a couple of things to make his ensemble complete, so we went shopping. One stop was for shoes, as in my picture. He settled for some nice black slip ons that I would have probably picked as well. We did sped some cash I didn't want to, but I didn't complain too much. After all, it was his first date, er, uh, meet up with his friend that just so happens to be a girl.

It is hard to believe that Forrest is the age I was when I started down the road of sin that was with me for many years. At his age I was already doing a lot of things I do not want to divulge here. I will say that I did start smoking cigarettes and listening to some very heavy and dark music (at the time, there is much worse now). My young life was just beginning and before me was a door of sin that I had never imagined. I not only opened the door, I kicked it down and let it flood my life.

All the while I looked back on the prayer when I was 8 to be when I was "saved". Saved from what I have no idea, except from hell, which I was constantly reminded of and told I must say the prayer to avoid. So I did. Then for the next 30 years my life of sin just kept growing, but I kept asking for forgiveness, because that's what I was taught. I was told that all I had to do was ask to be forgiven, but never told about repentance and the true faith in Christ needed for an actual conversion and re-birth.

It wasn't until I was 38 years old was I truly saved. My life changed 180 degrees then. I then saw just how I really measured up to the One that all will be judged against and saw my utter disdain for God. That is when He saved me.

I pray that Forrest, Allan and Matt will soon come to a saving faith in the Lord. I pray that I can be a good model and give a true and faithful witness for the things God has done for me and also for them. I need Him to work through me, instead of me trying to do it all. He is the bread of life and I pray that one day soon the boys will take the bite and see that He is good.

Day 161: Now, That's All I Needed

Stopped my my favorite place to eat for lunch today, McDonald's. Seems like they are giving away a free cookie with purchase of a large value meal. Now, I really do not need the McDonald's meals anyway, but to throw in a "free" cookie in is not any better for the aging physique. Sure, I could have refused the freebie, but c'mon, it was free.

This is how we all are though in a lot of areas. We like to feel like we are getting something for nothing, even if it is bad for us. Some may call them guilty pleasures or say they do no harm. I say that there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure or without consequence be it good or bad. The free cookie from McDonald's was definitely tasty, but it also added some extra calories on top of the high amount in the meal in the first place.

As far as guilty pleasures go, if it is "guilty" then it is probably wrong. If it violates your conscience, as a child of God, then it is sin. Plain and simple. We shouldn't justify these feelings away as partaking in them every now and then as proof they do not harm us. I am just as guilty as the next and am again preaching to myself.

May this be a wake up post to myself that I need to listen more to my conscience and less to my desires.

Day 160: Guitar-o World

Went to Nashville today with a great friend and brother, Justin. He is a musician so we went to check out some of the more popular music stores in Nashville. The three we visited were Guitar Center, Sam Ash and Gruhn's Guitars. All had a lot of great looking instruments and some hefty price tags.

I was most impressed with Guitar Center. They had a lot more stock in the show room than the others. Gruhns had the least, but their location probably made a difference and we also didn't visit the upper rooms.

Of course Nashville is known as "Music City USA" because of its production of most of the Country genre of music out there. It is also the top production center for music labeled as Christian or CCM. Looking over the instruments through all of these stores comes to mind an illustration of sin. These fine guitars, banjos and mandolins are in an of themselves neutral to sin. The intent behind the player is what would make these instruments "accomplices" or devices of sin. The instruments by themselves are not sinful. If one guitar is used to play praise music unto the Lord it is a great use of the instrument. Then, if that same guitar is used to play some music by a group like Hatebreed or Living Sacrifice it then becomes an instrument of sin and evil. It is the user and its use, not the object itself that is sinful. I would probably even lump tattoos into this category, as well.

Other inanimate objects often ascribed as "evil" by some very misguided people are Televisions, radios, cars, electricity and some types of clothing. These things are neither good nor evil until they are used for something not intended when they were made. Man brings the sin to the equation as we seek out new sins daily. While you say that you would never use a gun to rob or kill someone, what do you watch on your TV or computer? What type of music do you listen to using your radio or CD player? What kind of clothing do you wear or allow your children to wear?

May we all stop and think next time we accuse a object to be sinful instead of the motives behind the use of that object. Not that an object will get its feelings hurt for being "judged", but that we may place the blame for the sin on the motives and the person rather than on the object.

P.S.
The title of this post is a play on the "Bizarro" character from Superman

Day 159: The Controversies of Christmas

All I can say is WOW!I have never seen so much talk about the controversies of celebrating Christmas and other "issues" pertaining to the Christmas season. I have been part of conversations about using "X" instead of Christ when writing Christmas (ie. XMas), the use of trees during the celebration of Christmas and even the celebration of Christmas at all. Needless to say, I am perplexed at a lot of views. I will break each of these down for you and tell you the "issues" surrounding them.

I'll start with a big peeve of mine. Using "X" in Christmas. Yes, I know the origins. Yes, I also know that you are not Greek and that the X is probably the only abbreviation you use. So, why use it at all? Wouldn't the Greeks be wrong in shortening Christ to X as well? It is like using "C" in English to abbreviate Christ. Why not carry it further and use "O" for God? After all that's what the first letter of the Greek word for Theos is. Rationalize however you want, but it is still abbreviating Christ, no matter how you look at it. It is a step in the wrong direction and yes, I am sure that God minds.

Next is the use of Christmas trees. Seems like there are a few that want to link the use of Christmas trees to Jeremiah 10 -
Jeremiah 10:2-4
“ Do not learn the way of the Gentiles;
Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven,
For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the peoples are futile;
For one cuts a tree from the forest,
The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
4 They decorate it with silver and gold;
They fasten it with nails and hammers
So that it will not topple.

First off, when this was written Christmas trees were not even being used, since Jesus had not even been born yet. Second of all, this is not a warning against Christians using Christmas trees. These verses deal with actual worship of these adorned trees, as gods. So, get a grip, smack yourself around a little bit and remember that taking verses out of context is a big no-no.

Lastly, I have heard objections of even celebrating Christmas because it is a pagan holiday. Once again, I am well versed in the origins of the pagan festivals on the Winter Solstice and the worship of the sun god. Good thing I do not worship the sun or think the Winter Solstice any different than any other day or time. So, whew, I'm off the hook now. Well, apparently not. They then throw in that the Christmas season is so overly commercialized and we shouldn't participate in that. Once again, good thing I am not like "everyone" or they might have me there.

The Christmas season has been very commercialized over the past several decades and there is no end in sight. But should this dissuade people from celebrating the birth of the Savior? Even if it did not happen on December 25th? I would liken it to any Sunday morning church service across the globe. Will I stop going to church simply because most of those lining the pews on Sunday morning would really rather be somewhere else, doing something else, are recuperating from a hangover or just there to make an appearance so they will look holy? Heaven forbid I base what I do, say or believe on what the lost and perishing of this world are doing. I celebrate the birth of the Savior that died and shed His blood to cover my sins. What the stores and throngs of people do to commercialize this day will have to be answered for by them.

About 15 years ago, + or - a few years, while still unconverted I wrote a poem about the X in Christmas. I was unconverted at the time, but still felt it wrong that Christ was being replaced by an X. I was raised "in the church" after all and even though I was still under the burden of sin God had granted me the grace to see that it was wrong. Now I will be inundated with comments or remarks buy people telling me how the Greek this and the Greek that, but however you try to justify it does not make it right. Those that profess Christ should want Him forefront in anything and everything and want His Name proclaimed - not an X. People fight tooth and nail defending this practice and all the while are digging a deeper hold to crawl out of. Why would someone that has been forgiven by the grace of God and blood of Christ want to remove mention of His Name? Why would they do it for convenience sake? It makes no sense at all. If you are one of those then please pray about what you are doing. The lost and perishing see professing Christians do this and think it is fine.

I do have a question. Why do people say "ex-mas"? Is it because the "x" is short for Christ? Because in my estimation as a non English major (and one who talks like a hick anyway) that saying "ex" and saying Christ take about the same time, use about the same amount of breath and have the same amount of syllables.

Here is my poem that I wrote. Please feel free to use it in any way, but please not me as the author ans if you use it on the web link back to here.

Who Put the X in Christmas
Who put the X in Christmas ?
I ask myself today .
Who forgets the reason ,
And puts our Christ away ?
Who are the ignorant ones ,
That replace His name in vain ?
Each time I see the blasphemy ,
I hang my head in shame .
As I look upon my Christmas tree ,
And the star that's placed up high .
I think of what He gave for us ,
And for the ignorant my heart does cry .
It's been many , many years ago ,
But Christ will always be .
How great our God that gave His Son ,
That died on the cross for me .
Just one thing I'll say to you ,
And I think you will agree .
Without our Christ in Christmas ,
Just another day it would be .

Day 158: Back To Cable

We made the move back to cable today, we are ditching the dish. The offers from the local cable company were just too good to pass up, with the offering of cable with a DVR, the higher tier internet and telephone service for about the same as we were paying just for TV through DirecTV. It was a no brainer for us as we will be saving about $30/ month plus having faster internet and now a home phone again. So, it is a win for us.

Direc did have some advantages, but we weighed out the costs and the made a decision. This is what we must needs do when making any decision, weigh out all sides with the adequate information then proceed or withdraw. In Luke 14:25-35 Jesus tells us a parable about counting the costs of building a tower in reference to salvation. Who does not weigh out the costs before them before committing? It is a sharp stab to the easy believism of today, as people are not told to count the costs and only told they need to make a "decision" for Christ. A decision, itself, infers that their is another side and that something must be decided against, a rejection if you will. But through the altar call methodology of today no costs are expounded on, only an emotional call to "decide to be a Christian".

Emotionalism is rampant throughout the church buildings. Repentance is talked of as just being sorry about your sins, not the 180 degree turn of what true repentance is. Why is that? It boils down to an ego issue. The evangelists and preachers today must puff up their numbers and brag about how many wee "saved" or how many "gave their life to Christ". In all actuality these poor souls are double damned. They are on their way to hell plus they are brainwashed into thinking they are "good to go" or "have their ticket". They are worse off than before they heard the preacher speak.

This is a major issue as millions of souls are on their way to hell. We need a return to biblical Christianity, a return to what the bible, God's Word, says about salvation and conversion and not what these charlatans have been spreading. God's Word is clear, someone that is saved is changed. They no longer walk in this world and will walk in the statutes of God. He gives a new heart that hates the sin they loved and loves the God they hated. They are new, not this deceived sinner that "took care of it".

Stand up for God's Word. Sow the seeds of the true gospel and expose those that spread the falsities of this modern "gospel".

Day 157: Reliving Your Youth

Came across this Dukes of Hazzard play set while looking through a local flea market type establishment today. The Dukes were a popular thing back when I was a kid and seem to still hold some of that appeal. I do know that the toys are now highly collectible, just like most of the other toys from days gone by.

It makes since that these toys are highly sought after, as people try to regain some of their youth. They do this through means like this. They fork out big bucks for toys that only cost a few dollars when they were kids, in the hopes that it will jar some memories and illicit memories so they may feel young again.

I still have my original Star Wars toys from 1977, when the first movie was released. I was a big fan and was fortunate enough that I did not throw these goodies out, like most of the other things I had. That means that these action figures are over 33 years old now. I would like to say that it seems like just yesterday, but I can barley remember my youth. So, it is like a lifetime ago for me.

1977 was also about the year that I made a profession of faith while on a youth trip. I was declared saved, popishly by a man and I banked on that profession and man's proclamation for 30 years. I lived like the world, ingrained in every facet of sin thinkable. I never killed anyone, but I did have some strong dislikes that are just the same as murder in God's eyes. I had not a care in the world, just as long as I said my prayer at bed time and ask for forgiveness, which was usually "God please forgive me for all the sins I committed today, amen". Not quite the repentant heart, huh?

Just a little over 4 years ago God miraculously saved me. It was a miracle because I thought I was already saved and didn't need saving. By His grace, He showed me just how lost I was. Ever since He has been saving me every day. He saved me from hell and He saves me from a life of sin that breaks the fellowship with Him. I do still sin, but not as much, not as often and have an immediate repentance when I do. All of those are further evidences of His grace bestowed on me. He would be just as good if He did not save me or show me grace. I am so very thankful that He did choose me, for whatever reason. One day I may know why, but until the other side I will wonder - why?

Day 156: Coke Points Rock!

If you drink any Coke products then you are well versed in Coke Points. I am and have saved a lot of them over the years. Even took the whole family to Six Flags using the points saved up to use for admission a few years ago. Now I am back to about 6,000 +/- points and waiting for something really good in my points range. I was hasty once, the first year, right before the ending was supposed to happen and blew all of my points on a Diet Coke directors chair, then they extended the points system. I was actually a little peeved at the whole thing then, but I didn't stop drinking Diet Coke and I didn't stop participating in the program.

Most of my points are from 12 and 24 packs that I have personally consumed, which shows you how many sodas I drink. But, I do not drink coffee, tea or any kind of juice. Actually I have noticed that if someone drinks Diet Coke that is usually all that they will drink. Maybe they have be sneaking cocaine back into their products over the years and everyone gets addicted to them unknowingly. (just kidding Coke lawyers)

Drinking Diet Coke is one of my hanger on "addictions" or "guilty pleasures", if you will. I know I can stop drinking them at any time I choose, but I don't really want to. I do know that if and when God wants me to stop drinking them I no longer will. He was gracious to me after He saved me to take away the addiction of smoking. This was something that I started doing when I was 14 years old and did until my conversion at 38. He didn't have to, but He did. There are other areas that He did not take away from me that I will not go into right now, but use as a point that God knows what He is doing and sanctifies us in different areas in different timing.

The timing issue I have issues with myself and is an area that I need sanctifying in. At times, and with certain people, I expect them to have been dealt with the same as I have about issues in their life. Music, smoking, movies, etc. are all areas that are not really sinful in themselves, but the content dictates that they can be. But, He has seen fit to show me that I lack patience with people at times and I am beginning to bite my tongue and pray for them first and see where God will lead them and me. This, of course, does not refer to blatant sins that do not fall into the "gray areas". Those I feel need to be pointed out to help a brother or sister out in their walk.

Pray for me as I continue the sanctification process and lean more on God than I have been. I need His grace to be poured out in my life for this issue I have and many other areas as well. I am needy. I need my God to work in me and through me for Him to be glorified.

Day 155: We Got Our Parade On

Another year for Oak Grove in the Paducah Christmas Parade is in the books. It was another fun time, casualty free. God was good to us allowing us a safe a fun night together.

Although the parade was fun, we had great fellowship and saw some old friends along the route - he main reason we enter the parade is to be able to pass tracts out along the walk down Broadway. We create the tracts in house through Real Truth Matters and JT and Joseph do a wonderful job utilizing the talents that God has placed on them. Our prime goal was to get the gospel into the hands of as many people as we could and to glorify our Father. I believe we accomplished both and He then, in turn, allowed us to have a really enjoyable night of fellowship with our Lord as the focus.

I am currently in the process of uploading the video we used during the parade on the float. This year's theme was "Christmas Music Galore" so we took parts of several Christmas songs and put some video to them. Take a look on the Oak Grove Baptist Church Facebook page if you get a chance.

Day 154: Party Time!

Had a great time tonight with the RTM bunch at the Christmas party. I did win for the ugliest Christmas sweater, by the way (see previous post). We ate a great meal, reflected on what God has done through the past year, looked toward the future and did some laughing too. So it was a great night with some dear people.

My picture is of the T-Shirt the full time staff gave to me. It was custom designed and printed by JT and Joseph and was a really cool surprise. I say "Turn or Burn" a lot, in a joking manner (kind of) and they decided they would come up with something different. They did - and I really, really like it. It instantly moved up to my #1 spot on my shirt list. I also suggested that they be produced and added to the Real Truth Matter store. I am sure they would sell really well.

The term "Turn or Burn" is taken from those preachers that dangle you out over the flames of hell on a corn-stock while they are preaching. They try to "scare the hell out of you", which of course is not a biblical way to show someone the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. It is, like I said, a scare tactic used to illicit an emotional response and in turn create a decision in the hearers mind. That is wrong, of course. When I say "Turn or Burn" it is to my closest of friends. Although I say it in jest, it is a fact and Jesus spelled it out in Luke 13:3,5. He said "Repent or perish", which I say is the original "turn or burn". It was so important to Jesus that He said it twice, within two verses. If one doesn't repent/ turn from their sins, then they will perish/ burn in the lake of fire for all eternity.

We must take hell seriously, but we need to first address the sin in a person's life, then tell them how that affects their eternity and then show them the cross. We mustn't try to scare people out of hell, but expose the sin in their life with the Light of Jesus. Tell them that they must repent or they will perish in an eternal hell.
